Post Punk Situation

John Tiberi

In 1957 the Situationist International first met as a group of writers and artists in a remote village in northern Italy called Cosio d’Arroscia. Founding member and Marxist theorist Guy Debord is often credited with having done the most to popularise the theories of psychography in promoting the playful and creative aspect of the derive, inspired by the 19th century poet Charles Baudelaire and his concept of the flaneur.
Villa Faravelli, a public gallery in nearby Imperia provided an opportunity to consider how they may have influenced The Sex Pistols.

‘The study of the precise laws and specific effects of the environment, consciously organised or not, on the emotions and behaviour of individuals.’ Guy Debord.
